went in for a surf at Dawn this morning mate but retreated after about 20 minutes - High Tide and the water was very high - the waves were breaking onto the red dog bins!

Some bloke was standing still watching me as if he was puzzled. When I got out we had a quick chat. He was German or Dutch and was indeed puzzled.

I have given up on the idea of the tunnel from our kitchen to the summerhouse for now...

A project I am penning in for the future is a wigwam of our own. maybe a couple of wigwams in fact.

I'm sure the kids would have a great time in a wigwam - i remember having a wigwam as a child and spent many an hour playing 'red indians' with my face painted accordingly and a plastic tomahawk in my hand.

Surely it cant be too hard to get a few poles together and tie some canvas or fabric on top of it?
a couple of Motifs on it and bobs yer uncle.

We went to Bedes World on sunday and hed a cracking time - I noticed a few basic constructions including DIY tents/shelters and that's what reminded me of the hours of joy sheltering from the sun back in the 70's when we lived down south.

my workbench is in progress and I've screwed in one baton that will support the back of worktop and joins it to my shed.
The rest of the bench will be made using dowel joints and I intend to buy a doweling jig to assist me with this. I've never heard of a dowelling jig at first but when I followed some instructions following a google it really looks quite simple.
Had an hour or 2 in my shed last night humming and hah'ing the choices I had and finally took pencil to baton and then sawed it into relevant pieces.
Its lush using my Dads old black and decker workmate and I'm in no way intending on dumping it for a newer model in fact the more I use it the more its becoming mine. Hopefully one day Anna or Daniel will have their go with it and start to realise that woodworking really can be fun!

The first LP I ever bought was Adam and the Ants - Kings Of The Wild Frontier
The memory I have of holding it in the queue of Binns in Sunderland totally humbles me into a nostalgic wreck these days.

I can clearly remember going back to my Grandparents house and pulling the album out of the sleeve begging to 'put it on'. I was sent to the room that my Grandparents never used to listen to it. The drumming and the vocals instantly drilled into my senses and have resided there ever since.
The negative comments from the elders were exactly what any 9 year old kid wants to hear. Now Adam & the ants may seem soft to some but my family absolutely loathed it especially my Dad and to me that was 'well cool'
When I hear this song now I'm taken back to those days where I would endlessly stare at the album sleeve and inner sleeve with inner joy and ecstasy.
The lyrics "I feel beneath the white there is a red skin suffering" have always struck a chord with me and this is a song thats definately well embedded in the happy time side of my heart.

Must try this one sometime.... North East Bread - its champion

Stottie Cake recipe

Ingredients 1590g Plain flour
30g Salt
70g White Fat
14g Sugar
90g Yeast
850g
Water
30g Milk Powder

Method
Sieve all dry ingredients together and rub in the fat
Dissolve yeast in warm water, then add to ingredients and mix thoroughly
Knead for 10-15 minutes
Cover dough with a cloth and allow to stand for 30 minutes in a warm place
Knead dough again and allow to stand for a further 30 minutes
Weigh dough into 285g pieces, shape pieces into a round ball and allow to stand for a further 10 minutes
Roll dough pieces out to a diameter of about 22cm, cover and leave in a warm place for 20 minutes
Place on hot tray and press a shallow hole in the middle with a finger
Cook in hot oven (gas mark 8/230C/450F), turning after 8 minutes and baking until golden brown
Allow to cool, but remember that the best way to eat a stotty is when it's still warm and fresh from the oven.

I've just called Percy Hudson to check they supply all the bits n pieces - they do and they reccomend using 'riser' screws that somehow make a 'pilot hole' as they are going in and also countersink themselves in too. That would eliminate 2 parts of the process when putting it all together - nice!

hopefully I'll be able to report some success soon or have some flicks of a decent sized fire on Guy Fawkes night!

Chuffed that me mate Troffer has sorted me out a place in this years Blaydon race.
Its just over a month since the last 10k and I've rested my knee which was giving me jip.
Iliotibial band syndrome is what I was diagnosed with a very common injury linked to over training - I think it started as soon as I started incorporating some hills into my evening runs.
My main source of exercise this month has been cycling - I'm clocking up 20 miles a day commuting to work and back.
Got out surfing last weekend which was a blessing too as there's been little surf in recent weeks - its near enough flat again already - lets hope we get another swell soon.
These days I'm really happy when I get active and don't seem to enjoy sitting about so much unless its chilling out following some sort of activity. Spending time with the bairns is a joy when I feel fit and active and that's the main reason for looking after my health.
Resisting the daily bacon butty run at work is so much easier nowadays no doubt thanks to a daily feed of porridge oats n honey first thing in the morning.
I'm still grabbing the odd takeaway & eating chocolates and necking the odd beer or two but I do try to keep them to a minimum - going tea-total has often crept into my mind but with the odd occasion such as the curry night I've organised this Wednesday night soon knock that on the head.
I'm just blogging this in case I ever slip into some sort of state that I need a reminder that active & healthy lifestyle totally is my cup of tea dude :-)

Goji berry and chicken soup for colds and flu

as seen on the BBC's 'grow your own drugs' programme

ingredients
-----------
2 tbsp dried echinacea root
200 ml water, freshly boiled
5 tbsp goji berries, fresh or dried
2 litres chicken stock (homemade or from stock cubes)
3 chicken thighs or drumsticks (preferably organic)
2 large onions, peeled and sliced
12 shiitake mushrooms, thinly sliced
10 cm root ginger, peeled and shredded
2 fresh medium-sized chillies, finely sliced
8 garlic cloves,chopped
extra sliced ginger and chillis, to serve

method
------
1. 1. Combine the dried echinacea root with the water in a bowl to make a simple infusion. In another bowl, pour just enough cold water over the goji berries to cover, and leave to rehydrate. Set the echinacea and goji berries aside and leave to stand.
2. 2. Place the stock and chicken pieces in a large pan or slow cooker. Add the sliced onions, mushrooms, ginger and chillies and place around the chicken in the pan. On a very low heat, simmer gently for 1 1/2 - 2 hours, or until the chicken is tender and falls apart. Take off the heat.
3. 3. Five minutes before serving, add the goji berries and chopped garlic. Finally, strain the echinacea infusion and add this to the soup, reheating if necessary.
4. 4. Serve by ladling into bowls and garnishing with sliced ginger and chilli for an extra kick.

USE: Makes enough for 4. Can be eaten with noodles, if wished.

Heres a really homey winter warmer of a soup for you to try

ingredients;

peeled beetroot x 1
washed carrots x 3
bouillion powder 1 tbsp
water

Method;

grate beetroot and place in saucepan
grate carrots (chop off ends you don't eat!) put in same saucepan
cover contents in water (fill until about 2cm above ingredients)
add bouillion powder

bring to boil and then simmer for about 1 hour or until beetroot has softened.
the water will turn a gorgeous dark burgundy colour and the flavours will have been drawn out.
make sure the heat is not too high during the simmering time or you could lose some of these pungeant flavours)

Thats all - serve and enjoy

I personally believe this soup has a quality that makes you think of Eastern European travel perhaps. I close my eyes, take a mouthful and imagine I'm having a fortnight's break in Prague. You can go wherever you wish :-)

Managed to get out on my board for another sunrise surf session on Saturday morning.
Following a nappy change and bottle feed for my son at 6:00 I got him back to sleep around 7am and slid into my wetsuit before guzzling half a banana and honey with half a cup of hot ginger wine (no alcohol but a kick like a hooligan)
Natural daylight was was just dissolving the pitch black skyline when Troffer turned up in the dogmobile just after 7:30.
We squeezed my surfboard in through the boot on top of his, squeezed our bodies into the remaining space and headed for the sea.
A few minutes later we parked up the dogmobile and Troffer started to get into his wetsuit. I ran over the road to the cliff top to check on the surf - '"Wicked!!!" I shouted across to Troffer giving him the big thumbs up (please note 'wicked' is a phrase I have not used since the early 90s I would guess - the fact that the surfing conditions put me into a state of ectasy should surely excuse me on this occasion)
There were nice solid glassy big lines heading in with very little mess. So pleasing is this feeling it's hard to understand but it dredges up feelings of excitement, anticipation and adreneline, all these emotions become fused together and the state of 'stoked!' is born.

We were the first in the sea and had a good 10 minutes until the next surfer arrived followed by another and then another until a good 10-15 of us resembled a spread out pack of seal pups.
I managed to get stood up a few times but found it hard to break through the waves and paddle out as far as where the more experienced surfers were sitting and waiting. Perserverence paid off though when I finally mustered up the energy to break through and reach the line up after a 20-30 minute battle.
My lower triceps are killing as a result of paddling so hard to get to this point but I realise more of the same will hopefully make it easier over time.
When I headed back in after picking my wave I was reminded what a beast of a monster the North Sea can be as I was propelled like a dart towards the coastline, fortunately I landed somewhere within the wave and carried on in the same direction for what felt like an enjoyable eternity.
With hindsight I should have attempted to pop up much earlier to avoid been hurled in this way but at the time it did not seem like I had much choice.
I'm intending to stay shallow in upcoming sessions to fully master the art of 'popping up' before heading out so far again....
Believe me though I fully intend to get grinding on that glass sometime in the future - no doubt.

Above the horizon was a fantastic orange stripe. As bright and as vivid as volcanic lava.

Thanks very much to Mrs H for getting me this book back in August for my birthday. I'm gutted that I've finished it now as the book I am about to start does'nt look as uplifting as the magic carpet ride I've just come down from.
Tom Anderson writes about his mission to ride a certain wave that he saw on telly when he was a little Grommet. The book unfolds many adventures amongst his travels leading up to the perfect wave.
Each chapter is preceded with a sketch of the area you are about to read - I found myself flicking back to these quite frequently they really are a nice added touch. Tom's story Provides entertaining ups,downs and wipeouts along the way.
This little gem really does a great job to ignite wanderlust, pipe dreams and deep thought to anyone with the slightest passion for surfing.
Respect is due for the photographer of the books cover shot - beautiful shot and whoever's responsible for the luxurious velvety feel of the book, come to think of it the texture could be described as 'magic carpet material'.

10k Exhibition Park

Yesterday was a good day.

After months of waiting I finally got to run 10k for charity (Cancer Research)
The run was originally due to take place in Alnwick back in September however due to floods it was rescheduled. Rescheduled with a new location - Exhibition Park Newcastle.

Haza-Jr & Mrs H came along which was really good of them considering an early start (and Mrs H due to deliver our next Haza_Jr quite soon)

We met up with Mark R near the skateboard park (Where we both went skating v early one morning a couple of years back) there were a few BMX bandits who were actually very good.

After meeting another Mark (Mark L) who was also running today we sorted ourselves out ready for the run.

The trickiest part of the day now was in front of me - I had to try and get my trousers over my trainers without falling over. Then pin my number (197) to my shirt without piercing my nips.
Once that was out of the way I scooped Haza-Jr up and had a team photo took (Me n Mark R) and made our way to the warm up area.

I have never been to aerobics and this warm up exercise has made me realise what I have been missing. I was so out of step it was untrue - what made it harder for me was the fact that I could not understand what the leotard woman was saying and could only copy what I was seeing elsewhere - Chaotic Mud Slipping nonsense - still it warmed us up a tad so it was not a thankless task.

Myself and Mark opted to start in the back section estimating a time of more than 1 hour.

The Start was upon us - we shuffled amongst the pack each plugged intoour own MP3 land. We ran together for the first km or so until The Pidgeon Detectives flew into my earphones and upped the tempo another 20-30 Beats Per Minute... I gave Mark the thumbs up and upped my pace - weaving in and out of the pack feeling chuffed as chips...

This carried on for the next km or so and I just tried to keep it sensible and keep the pace to match the tempo (I had a playlist for tracks with 146-150 BPM)

It was lovely seeing Haza Jr and Sue a third of the way through and I had fun clapping at the marshalls and stewards who were clapping the runners - also gave a few hollers and whoops to a little Quartet acoustic session in the middle of town moor and fellow runners who kept overlapping with (Saw both Marks a couple of times)

My shoes nearly came off when we tackled the 8th kilometer which was through a boggy puddle riddled field and my legs felt like lead in the final 2 k. But my pace kept up with the music and Oasis sang their hearts out as I entered the final 500metres. When I turned a corner towards the finish line I spotted Mark L staright away cheering me on - I cheered back and really enjoyed hammering the finishing line into the sight of Mrs H and Haza Jr cheering me on.

When I collect my finishing medal I overheard the guy on the tannoy system shouting "57 mintues... these runners are still coming in under an hour.." I asked the guy who came in just before me what time he came in and he confirmed it was 57 minutes.

During all my training jogs I have worked out my estimated times and averaged a pace that should have seen me finish around 1:10 so to beat the hour was to me a fantastic achievement.

Mark R followed me in at 1:05 which was brilliant too as he also expected a time around 1:15-1:20.

Once my hilarious stretching routine/performance was over the remainder of the afternoon was spent soaking in the bath, eating sunday dinner, watching a Norman Wisdom movie with Haza Jr and forcing a curry down the hatch before bedtime as a treat.

The morning after I am feeling fine and dandy - a little stiffness in the thighs but the buzz of the day is still with me .

As well as raising money for charity this running lark has really put me on a good path.
I'm planning on having a regular shuffle in 'MP3 land' again soon

Building a base for a place for me shed

Yesterday me and me Dad made a thick concrete base for a new shed to be sited on.

materials needed (for an 8' x 1'3" base)

5 large b&q bags sharp sand
1 bag of 10mm shingle
half a bag of blue circle cement
a water source (hose with nozzle is ideal)

tools needed

spade
shovel
a bit of wood 2"x 2" x 1' roughly (nearest to this you have handy)
finishing trowel

heres what we did...

dug area out to the side of an existing concrete base.

at back and sides of dug out area put an edging board and sank it so the top was at level desired for slab to be.

held steady with wooden stakes (for pegs).

got sharp sand, 10mm gravel and cement (blue circle) ready

mixed up the below (using shovel turning method)

3 shovels of sand
1 shovel of gravel
1 shovel of cement

Once mixed well made a hole on pile and splashed a little water in.

mixed it up again with shovel until the colour was even (should not be too sloppy)

chucked this mix (a shovel at a time) into the gap and flatten down with a bit of wood, then smoothed it out with the finishing trowel.

when finishing the top of the base add a little bit more water to get a very smooth finish.

The finished base was level with top of existing patio and top of edging boards sank.

I protected the new base overnight from cats and other wild animals - rather than sitting in the dark on a deck chair all night I lay a load of brushes and rakes over the top.
When I checked this morning the base seemed unscathed and still in tact with no sight of any animals attached to any rakes.

Thanks v much to Dad for all the help and advice with this part of the project :-)

I really dislike buning my toungue/mouth.
The problem always occurs when I'm tasting during a cooking session or if I've used a microwave a bit flippantly.
Instantly I try to undo the damage thats been done but sadly I realise that the only way to sort it out is to roll back time.

lets face it..... we dont think twice these days that some intelligent clown invented an electric box called a 'microwave'. A miraculous invention that enables us to put stone cold food into and 2mins 30 secs later have a bowl full of vocanic lava with the aroma of homemade soup.

when I used to work as a merchandiser setting up new shops fro the the likes of ESSO, SHELL, BP etc there was an old character called Dave Thomas who was an SDE (Sales Development Executive) who used to pop in to get his hands dirty and muck in.
He was always a pleasure to work with and made me and my mate Jon have a right old giggle - he's the type of character that turn up to the camra beer festivals on a regular basis.
Every time we were getting a round of sarnies in we would ask Dave with relish what he would like. He always replied the same thing in a very fast and flippant style a bit similar to the way Larry Grayson used to speak.
I really do hope that the words Dave spoke always remain embedded in the 'happy days' corner of my mind.
The first part of his reply would be quite slow dry and droll, the second part however would be spat out quicker than a really quick thing.

Ladies and Gentlemen I give to you Dave Thomas SDE's immortal response to the question "What do you want Dave" (Drumroll please)

Theres something slightly unnerving yet pathetic about a man talking to you whilst crunching/snapping at a big green apple after every sentance he speaks.

Apart from observing apple habits I went surfing again last weekend - real rough seas with an under current that was doign its damndest to whip our legs away - great fun. Troffers now got his own board - I'll be next - saving my notes and aiming to get one next springtime.

In case you don't know the Darwin Awards are an annual honour given
to the person who did the gene pool the biggest service by killing
themselves in the most extraordinarily stupid way. Last year's winner was the
fellow who was killed by a Coke machine which toppled over on top of him as he
was attempting to tip a free soda out of it.

And the nominees this year, in reverse order, are: ..........

7. A young Canadian man, searching for a way of getting drunk
cheaply because he had no money with which to buy alcohol, mixed gasoline
with milk. Not surprisingly, this concoction made him ill, and he
vomited into the fireplace in his house. The resulting explosion and
fire burned his house down, killing both him and his sister.

6. A 34-year-old white male found dead in the basement of his home
dead of suffocation, according to police. He was approximately 6' 2" tall
and weighed 225 pounds.

He was wearing a pleated skirt, white bra, black and white saddle shoes, and a woman's wig.

It appeared that he was trying to create a schoolgirl's uniform look.

He was also wearing a military gas mask that had the filter canister removed and a rubber hose attached in
its place. The other end of the hose was connected to one end of a
hollow tube approx. 30" long and 3" in diameter.

straps to bungee jump off a 70 foot railroad trestle. Fairfax County police

3. A man in Alabama died from rattlesnake bites. It seems that he

smell of a gas leak. Sensibly, management evacuated the building,
extinguishing all potential sources of ignition; lights, power, etc. After the
building had been evacuated, two technicians from the gas company were
dispatched. Upon entering the building, they found they had difficulty navigating in
the dark. To their frustration, none of the lights worked. Witnesses
later described the sight of one of the technicians reaching into his
pocket and retrieving an object that resembled a cigarette lighter. Upon
operation of the lighter-like object, the gas in the warehouse exploded, sending
pieces of it up to three miles away. Nothing was found of the technicians,
but the lighter was virtually untouched by the explosion. The technician
suspected of causing the blast had never been thought of as 'bright' by his
peers.

1. Based on a bet by the other members of his threesome, Everitt
Sanchez tried to wash his own "balls" in a ball washer at the local
golf course. Proving once again that beer and testosterone are a bad
mix, Sanchez managed to straddle the ball washer and dangle his

Saw the super furries last night - great gig - those furry funkers really put the ock into rock. bass was running through my body like a mega mega massive warm furry fuzzy monster. Great sound system and an awesome set.

Previous to that we ate in Barn Asia - Gorgeous food in great looking place. Steaming hot mussels in tiger beer and coconut and chilli jam sauce mmmmmmm

I had a dream about tearing into a bun which I think was a belgian bun. the next morning I remembered the dream and gave myself the task of finding one to nash on asap.

I've tried around 15 different bakers shops including supermarkets too - all failed to produce the BELGIAN BUN

today is the first time I have googled BELGIAN BUN
Having studied the results I received in google images I can confirm it is the same bun that I was chomping on in dreamland

I get this feeling when I listen to many songs and its a euphoric feeling and that this is the pinnacle of life.

been eating a lot of eggs recently - and why not?
tasty, good for you, cheap enough - good lunchtime snack - not to heavy and good to go (back) to work on
these days my favoured style of egg dining is scrambled
the problem me and my egg mate Douglas Sparks are having is the constant bombardment of silly egg rules we are faced with

a couple of years ago when we frequented ASDA supermarket cafe on a regular basis for eggs of the fried variety we would be told you can only have 3 eggs...
no more no less just 3 - this nearly caused Douglas to have a mental breakdown. Douglas and I would contemplate different ways to get round this rule but each time we concocted a new plan we were hit back by the big burly hand of the grumpy looking egg server "BITCH!"

Just today another spanner has been thrown into the egg eating train we have recently been riding quite contently...
The cafe in the G Market that we have been frequenting almost bi-daily almost literally threw egg in my face.
I strolled up (a bit cocky like) to the counter and placed my order

"Scrambled egg on toast times two please"
"We are not doing eggs between 12 and 2"
"Eh?"
"We are not doing eggs between 12 and 2... we are too busy to be cooking eggs, so we don't do them between 12 and 2 now"

I humbly tucked my tail between my legs and strolled away feeling like somebody had just popped my egg

Douglas and I discussed this disgusting new rule whilst eating scrambled eggs on toast around the corner at another cafe (you would think we would be happy with this - but the teapots are much smaller and the ambience not quite as suited to eat eggs in.)

Douglas suggested he popped round and ordered scrambled eggs just to wind them up (he did'nt though)
We wondered what Sir Alan Sugar would make of this matter - not selling something on the 'lunch' menu at 'lunch' time - "pathetic - your fired"

We perused the idea of opening an egg eating empire called 'eggs are not a problem'

Also toyed with the idea of publishing a document full of egg rules to combat these rogue traders - rules such as 'thy shalt sell thee eggs in dozens, singles and fours however thy customer demands thy eggs'

Why is it that we live in the age of the new millenium and yet doing a few eggs is still causing havoc in places that should be selling eggs as easy as pie

whilst walking through the biggmarket I saw a bloke coming out of finlays newsagents singing at the top of his voice - pub singer stylee - he was holding a packet of fruit pastilles to emulate a slim style microphone
Trying to have a good read on the metro I moved 2 times on the metro this morning trying to avoid loud chatty grannys - I really am considering wearing ear defenders to combat this problem
the next place I sat was soon occupied by 2 chatty chavas who seemed to want to talk about chaff all at the top of their voices - pah!
I'm currently reading 'this book will save your life' by a.m. homes - guaranteed to make you eat a doughnut or 2 within days of starting to read it! - really good style to the way its written

An early memory of mine is from when I was aged around 12
There was I on a holiday up north skating around sunderland (crowtree leisure centre) ice rink for hours at a time
the songs of the time were been streamed through those megaphone style speakers.
The combination of skating round and round and banging my head every now and then on the ice provided me with a psychedelic buzzy feeling.
The song 'The Story of the blues' by Wah! always takes me back there
I can even remember wearing a knitted cardigan - baggy style
sometimes my cousin Lee would skate alongside me but mainly I remember been a lone skater playing it cool

How to set landline BT phone to work in conjunction with total broadband talk phone

Open a telnet session to your home hub by clicking on start, run, and typing "TELNET API.HOME" (without quotes)into the run field. This will open a session. Login using username ADMIN, and whatever your admin password is. (admin again is the default)

This will get you the {admin}=> prompt, enter the following command:

voice fxoport config incfxodest=all

Then exit the command prompt by typing "exit"

This procedure will get your hub phone to accept calls on the land line number. To use it to make calls out on the land line dial 5 first.

Ludwig, Late 70s

This was a world-beating five minute cartoon about an ovoid eggy jewel that lived in a forest. Surreal eh? In every episode - there were 65 of them - something would happen to the animals of the forest and Ludwig would come to the rescue. His 'body' facets would open up and out would pop arms, legs, gadgets or a helicopter rotor blade. He was constantly watched by a bird watcher in a deerstalker with huge binoculars. At the end of every episode Ludwig played a Mozart horn concerto through the credits. It was the strangest cartoon ever, but we all loved it.

Recently I've been keeping abreast with the 'Iain Baker leaves XFM and no-one blames him' situation.
This got me a bit nostalgic and as well as googling for chopper bikes and wooden skateboards I searched for 'jesus jones' and came up trumps when I found this video that me and my mate Paul were in.
